Rauchen Verboten

September 29, 2008

As most of you know, I’ve grown very fond of Zurich and I LOVE Switzerland in general.  It’s like a dream world around here.  Everywhere is beautiful, everyone is rich, everything is the highest “Swiss-made” quality.  For crying out loud, Zürich was ranked the #1 in Mercer’s 2008 Quality of Living Survey…this is the seventh year in a row*.  Yeah!! We’re number 1! We’re number 1!

So, what is there not to love about Zürich? Smoking. Even though the Zürichers love fitness and always leave work to do some sport, they all seem to smoke! It’s everywhere! It’s not just bars and clubs. Restaurants don’t understand the concept of a non-smoking section. However, in their defense, most restaurants are so small, that a separate section would be pointless. Several office buildings that I have been in have smoking floors or smoking sections on the floor. Here’s a tip: a mobile cubicle-type wall does not keep the smoke from spreading throughout the entire floor.  Luckily smoking is banned on the trains (although this has been a relatively new regulation); however, passengers are ready to light of their cig as soon as they step off the train.

Those who don’t enjoy smelling like an ashtray and have no choice but to inhale ridiculous amounts of second-hand smoke have finally gotten some relief.

On July 1, Geneva and Zürich both enforced a smoking ban in public buildings. This includes train stations but not covered train platforms (go figure – that’s where everyone is!). Geneva went on to ban smoking in bars and restaurants while Zürich decided to have a separate vote for this which was held on September 28.  The vote has been cast and…the smoking ban barely won.

Smoking ban in cafés and restaurants

  • Yes:  168,780
  • No:  129,534

Relief at last! Wait, there is no mention of when this new legislation will be put into action. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be after we move.

I’m really suprised that the Yes votes weren’t higher considering we see this commercial every time we go to the movies.

*In the interest of full disclosure, Zürich is also ranked 9th in Mercer’s 2008 Cost of Living Survey. This quality of life has a price!

Glasgow is somehow the 43rd best city for personal safety, um ok?

Is it okay if I add you to my blogroll?

I’m glad you are going to get some relief!

When they passed the smoking ban in England I was so so happy! Although now everyone just stands outside of buildings and pubs and smokes…still baby steps!
